"Löyly“ tasting at Rajaportti Sauna

We are excited to introduce you to the amazing "Löyly“ tasting Sauna experience at Rajaportti Sauna, Finland's oldest public Sauna in the Sauna capital of the world, Tampere!

You'll be joined by the Heater of Rajaportti Sauna and Finnish Saunamaster, Alexander Lembke, who'll be generously sharing his extensive knowledge on everything there is to know about Löyly.

Sauna and Löyly are inseparable and together they're the heart and soul of Finnish sauna culture. The Finnish word sauna is the best known Finnish word and is used in more than 143 different languages. The Finnish word Löyly, like its meaning, is largely unknown outside Finland, except in the Baltic countries. Löyly is the steam and also the spirit in the sauna, and Rajaportti Sauna is famous for its soft, fresh and long-lasting Löyly. Both Löyly and the heat come from Rajaporttis pre-heated, massive stove. Rajaportti Sauna is now a listed building and has remained more or less unchanged for more than 100 years. Here you can experience a real time travel into the past as you enter one of the best Saunas. This sauna, which is still heated with wood in the traditional way, was opened in 1906 and has since provided visitors from near and far with an unforgettable and unique sauna experience.

During the "Löyly tasting", participants will first learn about the deeper meaning of Löyly from a cultural and mythological point of view. In the practical part of the event, participants will learn how to create Löyly and experience the different forms of Löyly with all their senses, learning to distinguish between the many possible variations.

As there is no good Löyly without good sauna design, Alexander Lembke, will not only talk about Löyly but also give an introduction to good sauna design during the event. Both theoretical and practical instruction will take place during a 3 hour sauna session in the Rajaportti sauna.

Swimwear is recommended but not required for the mixed group. The maximum number of participants is 20.

The Löylytasting experience is priced at 300 € + VAT, in addition to the sauna rental fee. The sauna rental fee is 440 € on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 520 € on Sundays and public holidays.

The café at the Rajaportti sauna is available on request and serves food and refreshments. We can also offer smaller 'Löyly' tasting packages on regular sauna days, and can arrange other options on request. It is possible to arrange for the group to help heat the sauna for a while.
